Melanie Smallman, Managing Director
Melanie founded Think-Lab in 1999 and has hands-on involvement in every aspect of Think-Lab’s work. She is passionate about communicating science – and supporting others to do so.
With 20 years’ experience of leading organisations and delivering senior-level communications, media relations and policy advice, Melanie is an established practitioner in communications and a thinker in the relationship between science, society, policy & politics.
Training initially as a microbiologist, Melanie has worked in communications and policy for organisations including NERC, The Wellcome Trust and The Science Museum. She also has a Masters degree in Science Communication from Imperial College, a PhD in Science and Technology Studies from UCL, is a co-convenor of the London PUS Seminar Series and in 2015 completed a Fellowship in Science, Technology and Society at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Bridging the gap between research and practice, Melanie is committed to making sure that Think-Lab’s work draws on and leads the latest thinking in the field.
